ColdFusion is the leading cross-platform Web application server that gives you the fastest way to build and deploy scalable web systems.

ColdFusion enables you to incorporate live data into dynamically created web pages. For example, with ColdFusion your online store can actually deal with real-time inventory levels, enabling you to notify your customers of any out of stock items.

Benefit from these features

Rapid Development Build complex applications quickly and easily.

Scalable Deployment Deliver reliable, complex sites and applications with load balancing and fail-over.

Open Integration Use the full range of Internet and enterprise technologies.

The time will eventually come when you need to work with a database for a web site or office data. Using a database greatly enhances your ability to add and remove content, and all in all it requires less work to set up.
Take an e-commerce web site for example. With its many items for sale, without the use of a database a separate web page would have to be made for each item and you would have to modify each page or make a new page every time you changed or added items.

With a database this is different; you can simply make a single page to view all of your items. You can also easily add a way to search for an item. When you need to change or add an item you simply login to a secure maintenance area of the web site and look up the item and change the price or add an item. No new web pages are needed since you use the same page over and over again to display all your items and that page changes dynamically.

ASP.NET its predecessor being ASP is a set of web development technologies marketed by Microsoft. Programmers can use this set of technologies to build web applications that look to the client to be standard web pages but have power features built into the controls.
PHP

PHP is a widely-used server-side, cross-platform scripting language for creating dynamic Web pages. You create pages with PHP and HTML. When a visitor opens the page, the server processes the PHP commands and then sends the results to the visitor's browser, just as with ColdFusion. Unlike ColdFusion, however, PHP is Open Source which makes its initial start up cost much less.

Javascript
JavaScript is a scripting language developed by Netscape to enable Web authors to design interactive sites. Although it shares many of the features and structures of the full Java language, it was developed independently. Javascript can interact with HTML source code, enabling Web authors to spice up their sites with dynamic content. JavaScript is endorsed by a number of software companies and is an open language that anyone can use without purchasing a license.

Cascading Style Sheets are an extension to HTML.

Allowing for multiple layers on a single Web page.

The layers can be positioned absolutely, fixed, relative etc. giving the designer more control over what a browser will display.

CSS layers are an alternative to tables and can have their own scrollbars separate from the rest of the page.

In addition, CCS layers offers designers more control over the appearance of fonts, background images, and borders. You can also control the visibility of the layer with JavaScript. See here for an Example.
Click on the button that says "Hide Colors and Patterns" you notice the page does not refresh.
