The end of the decade will be at the end of 2010

Filed under: Misc — Rick @ 12:53 pm

Everyone is talking about the end of the decade. Actually, this is the last year of the first decade of the new century/millennium. Why do I say that?

I learned as a child that there is no 0 (zero) year. Why would this make a difference? If there was a zero year, 2009 would have been the last year of the first decade. Without the zero year 2010 is the last year of the first decade. This means the new decade does not start until 2011.

Still not sure you understand?

Count from 0 – 9. How many numbers are there? Ten, right? Now count from 1 – 9. How many numbers are there? Nine. How many years in a decade? Ten.

If you still don’t believe this here are some links to check out:

Detected an invalid snapshot configuration ESX

Filed under: Virtualization — Rick @ 2:36 pm

If you have ever gotten this error it can cause a sinking feeling in your stomach. As good as virtual machines are and as much as I love them the one thing that can cause anxiety is if something should happens to the files that make up the virtual machine.

One Saturday morning I had to install updates on a critical mail server so like always I went to make a snapshot first. This way if something goes terribly wrong I just revert to the snapshot and I am back in business. So I right click on the virtual machine to take a snapshot. Instead of seeing in the task list the bivalent and always welcome “Completed” I saw “Detected an invalid snapshot configuration”. I thought oh no what has happened? I did some digging and someone recommended cloning the machine and that would take care of the issue. I thought that would be too easy but it worked perfectly.

How did I get into this predicament in the first place? This is a Windows 2003 Server and I needed to make some changes. I need to delete one hard drive and add another. The machine already had a snapshot on it before I made these changes. Thus the problem if you add and or delete drives while the machine has a snapshot the VM can get confused and thus you are stuck.

For me this worked. Hopefully it will help someone else.

If you thought the Wii was something wait until you see Project Natal.

Filed under: Misc — Rick @ 10:08 pm

Controller-less? Didn’t you mean Cordless? NO, If you thought the Wii was something wait until you see Project Natal. Project Natal is a technology Microsoft is developing that will replace the remote control on Xbox 360-powered TVs. Here is the title Introducing Project Natal on the xbox’s web site “No Strings (or Controllers) Attached”.

Should I say Hello “HAL” for those of you not old enough to remember? click here.

This is really amazing. They say they can do this now. I have seen a lot of vaporware before but I believe this is real. WOW! Just watch the videos.

Open DNS vs Google DNS

Filed under: Software — Rick @ 2:39 pm

Google just announced their Public DNS product in their blog post today. Does Open DNS have anything to worry about? I would say maybe. Google only offers basic DNS at this time so they do not even come close to what Open DNS offers. The reason I say this is because Google has enough money to do anything they want but then again if that was the case why didn’t they just buy Open DNS? Who knows but this could be the first step toward offerings like Open DNS. If you are not familiar with Open DNS it is incredible what they offer for FREE. I protect my whole household from many bad web sites with Open DNS. It is my first line of defense in keeping the bad guys out. You can even setup a customized block page with an image of your choosing. Here is mine:

The other day I set up my Father’s network (one computer) with it and he calls me up and says: “I tried to go to this link someone sent me and your picture came up. How did these people get your picture? I explained the process to him and I think he understood.

The bottom line is although Google says do no harm, many people worry that they may become the Wal-Mart of the internet. Big enough to push their weight around and push the little guy out of business. Boy people love those low prices at Wal-Mart and I have to say I love most of Google’s products. Google has what some call a less than free model which worries many of their competitors. However if Google just puts out competition and not domination that will be good for all consumers.

I found this after I posted

Office 2010 / Outlook 2010

I have been using Outlook 2010 now for several days. I like it better that Outlook 2007 but again they have changed some stuff around. Not nearly as different as the change was from Office 2003 to 2007.

One changed feature is the file tab. I especially like the layout of File Tab better that the standard file menu.

I also like the layout of the new Ribbon compared to Outlook 2007.

If you use 2 accounts in Outlook they have move the accounts drop down. This is used when sending an email. You can choose which email address you want the email to come “From:” this also changes your signature if you have one set up for each account. The drop down is now above the “To:” field and is more appropriately called “From”.

Another thing I do like is the threading of discussions grouping as a default. The only thing about this is I wish they had made it a little smarter. It only groups on Subjects and not content. So for example when I email a distributor for a price a lot of the time in the Subject I will say “Price Please”. Well it groups these together even if they are not from the same discussions or thread. If they looked into the message (they already have it on indexed on the Exchange Server) and picked out key words they could group it on true discussions.

Overall I’m Happy with this new Outlook 2010 and think it will be a nice upgrade.

iPhone User Not Happy

Filed under: Misc — Rick @ 5:05 pm

Hey Apple and AT&T, I would really like to register my complaint about your Apps Store approval process. (ya along with everyone else from what I hear). It would be so great to have Google’s Latitude and Google Voice as an dedicated application and not have to use the web app.

When this user’s contract is up I will be taking a serious look at the Droid.

Come on Apple don’t be the playground snob that will not let the other kids play in your game. Oh I forgot, we are all grown up now and it’s about money. It is always about money however this could very well back fire on Apple.

Just my thoughts on the subject.

Office 2010 Installation Errors

Filed under: Microsoft — Rick @ 2:15 pm

I tried installing the Office 2010 Beta 64 and got an error. So I thought forget the 64 and install the 32-bit. Not too many people need the 64-bit anyway. I don’t but I thought I should get the experience anyway. I will be uninstalling 64-bit and installing the 32-bit soon. I like that my Outlook profiles stayed in please even after I uninstalled Office 2007.

First off I got this error:

Error: 1935: An error occurred during the installation of assembly competent {659FB0C5-3A28-4A7D-B6FD-322E91478238}. HRESULT: 0×80070005

Then I got Error: 2203.

Really there was a simple fix for both but I think Microsoft will need to make this a little simpler to have the masses installing it.

The fixes were… Well the first thing I should have done right off the bat was right click on the executable and click run as administrator. That being said I would have thought their Office even Beta could be installed without disabling THEIR Anti-Virus. Yes I am running “Microsoft Security Essentials” on my home office computer. I had to disable “Real-Time Protection” in order to get Office 2010 Beta to install.

Google Chrome OS

Filed under: Google Apps — Rick @ 11:47 am

Well got the Google Chrome OS up and running in a virtual machine. Not much to see just a browser and several online options / applications. I may try a USB thumb drive just to see if I can get a better resolution for the screen. Granted this is only the beginning and they can make a lot of changes during the development. It might be of some use on Netbooks which I am thinking is the market they want to place it in anyway.

Will this be competition for Microsoft? Only time will tell. However, Google has enough money to throw behind Chrome if they really want to. But then again Big Blue had enough money to throw behind OS/2 Wrap and look where that went.

Here are a couple of screen shots.

What is so good about Google Dash Board?

Well I will tell you. It brings all (well not all yet but a lot) of your Google Apps and Service together in one spot. It is nice to have a launching pad and information all on one page.

How do you get there. Well the easiest way is to simply add /dashboard in the address field right after Google.com for example. https://www.google.com/dashboard/ you will be asked to login even if you are already logged in to something like Gmail.

It gives you a lot of information about your account. Here is a quote from their help page. “We focused on Google Account data, because that’s the data that is personally associated with you. Therefore, we want you to have as much access to and control over it as possible.”

You can also see a video about the ins and outs of Google Dashboard.

Exchange 2007 Export-Mailbox error -2147221233

Filed under: Exchange Server — Rick @ 8:29 pm

After installing Exchange 2007 SP1 Management Tools on Windows XP SP3 x86 and Outlook 2007 with SP2 already on, the export-mailbox cmdlet was returning this error:

Export-Mailbox : Error was found for User Name (email@address.com) because: Error occurred in the step: Approving object. An unknown error has occurred., error code: -2147221233
At line:1 char:15 + Export-Mailbox <<<< -Identity User_Alias -PSTFolderPath C:\temp

I was ready to give up and noticed a blog post. The solution seemed too simple to work but it did.

All I had to do was run FixMapi.exe from the command prompt, wow that was easy. I ran the command again and to my surprise it worked.

Thank You Roman Rozinov!!
